Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the Primary Years Programme (PYP) developed by the International Baccalaureate organisation. This stresses inquiry and critical thinking as well as achieving skill levels consistent with anglophone national curricula. The main features of the programme are listed below.

  • School year 2011-12:

  • - Primary (Elementary) grades 1 through 5 (approximate ages 5½ to 10½)

(Please note that children must be 6 years old by december 31st to enter grade 1.
For children younger than this age please refer to our partner kindergarten,
    the Bilingual Playgroup : www.playgroup.fr)

    - Five classes for Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4 and Grade 5

    - Middle school to 9th Grade, leading toward the French Baccalaureate

  • 12 hours of instruction in English and 12 hours of teaching in French.

  • French as a foreign language classes are in place for children new to the language or requiring additional support. These classes are billed to the parents, supplementary to the regular fees.

Please note, this is only available in grade 1. Children in Grade 2 and above are required to have a level in french language which enables them to follow the curriculum without language support.

  • All regular curriculum areas are taught (some in English, others in French). Apart from the two main languages, instruction includes mathematics, science, social studies, music, art, physical education and technology.

  • Low teacher-pupil ratio

  • BISS is able to take advantage of all the facilities of a much larger institution, including special science laboratories, sports hall, library and computer network. Student security is enhanced by this arrangement, as are opportunities for extra-curricular activities.
Further details can be obtained by contacting the BISS administration office : .

Admissions

Language requirements in French
  • Grade 1
French as a Foreign Language support is offered for children entering grade 1. This is billed seperately to parents at the additional fee of 40 euro per hour if the tuition is one-to-one, or 20 euro an hour for group tuition (depending on the needs of other children in the class). Support lessons take place twice a week for the duration of the year.

  • Grade 2 and above
While it should be noted that our teachers are experienced in providing in-class support for children with French as a second language, children applying for all other grade levels should have a level of French which allows them to effectively follow the programme without additional aid from a support teacher. An evaluation will take place at the school to ascertain the applicant's language level.

Language requirements in English
  • All grade levels:
All our teachers are experienced in providing the specialist classroom environment necessary for the successful integration of students with a range of English language experiences. However, applicants should have a knowledge of English which will allow them to sufficiently follow our international curriculum with half the week taught in English. Language evaluations are carried out where necessary to assess the student's level in relation to the grade/ class they are applying for.

Teachers

Instructors are fully qualified members of the teaching profession, and are certificated in their home countries. They are native speakers of English or French, while at the same time having a thorough working knowledge of the alternative BISS language of instruction. They are trained and experienced in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) or French as a Second Language (FSL) One of their prime concerns is to create a friendly, happy, welcoming classroom atmosphere for all students.

Parents

Parents are strongly encouraged to be actively involved in BISS affairs. Elected Parent representatives for each BISS class participate in the Lucie Berger Parent-Teacher council meetings.
