Mission Statement
"Learning and Growing Together"
The Bilingual International School of Strasbourg is dedicated to the intellectual, personal, moral and cultural development of its students.
The curriculum reflects the international character of its student body, with English being one of the two languages of instruction.
The French language and culture are carefully integrated into the school programme, allowing the students to take full advantage of the rich environment that surrounds them.
The ultimate goal is to offer a full programme from Primary through secondary education following the international Baccalaureate framework.
Curriculum
The Curriculum is based on the Primary Years Programme (PYP) developed by the International Baccalaureate organization. This stresses inquiry and critical thinking as well as achieving skill levels consistent with anglophone national curricula.
The main features of the programme are listed below.
- Current year (2006-07):
- Primary (Elementary) Grades 1 through 5 (approximate ages 5½ to 10½)
- Three classes (Grade 1; Grades 2 & 3; Grades 4 & 5)
- School year 2007-08:
- Primary (Elementary) grades 1 through 5 (approximate ages 5½ to 10½)
- Four classes for Grades 1 to 5
- A new 6th grade class will be established in Sept. 2007, with a full secondary education programme
- 13 hours of instruction in English and 13 hours of teaching in French.
- All normal curriculum areas are taught (some in English, others in French). Apart from the two main languages, instruction includes mathematics, science, social studies, music, art, physical education and sport.
- Low teacher-pupil ratio
- BISS is able to take advantage of all the facilities of a much larger institution, including special science laboratories, sports hall, library and computer network. Student security is enhanced by this arrangement, as are opportunities for extra-curricular activities.
Further details can be obtained by contacting the BISS administration office :

Students
Currently BISS students mainly originate from Britain, the USA, several European countries or are of French nationality relocating from overseas.
The school is appropriate for a wide variety of students:
- children of English-speaking, internationally-mobile families,
- children whose mother tongue is not English, but who would benefit from intensive English-as-a second-Language (ESL) tuition and an international curriculum,
- children of francophone, internationally-mobile families, who aim for a bi-lingual education,
- all children wishing to benefit from a bi-lingual English-French education.
The education received at BISS is designed to enable students to reintegrate into their national system or into one of the numerous International Schools throughout the world.
Teachers
Instructors are fully qualified members of the teaching profession, and are certificated in their home countries. They are native speakers of English or French, while at the same time having a thorough working knowledge of the alternative BISS language of instruction. They are trained and experienced in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) or French as a Second Language (FSL) One of their prime concerns is to create a friendly, happy, welcoming classroom atmosphere for all students.
Parents
Parents are strongly encouraged to be actively involved in BISS affairs. Elected Parent representatives for each BISS class participate in the Lucie Berger Parent-Teacher council meetings.
Advisory Committee
The Advisory Committee comprises a team of members of the local community with professional experience in education and in the development and administration of International Schools. Its members liaise between the Board and teachers and assist in practical matters of everyday management, in close association with the Proviseur (Director) of the Lucie Berger school.
